Research firm Strategy Analytics released its latest research last Friday. According to the result, global smartphone shipments have risen 50% in the first quarter from a year earlier to 54 million units and made up 18% of the total mobile market, which generates the strongest growth for almost 3 years and leads the handset industry out of recession.

Apple’s share of smartphone sales is up from 10.6% to 16.4%, ranking third among all the smartphone brands. Nokia ranks the first place, rising from 38.2% to 40%. The runner up is RIM, falling slightly from its 20.3% to 19.7%. It is reported that the sales are driven by healthy operator subsidies, competition between vendors, and a rising number of cheaper models built around operating systems.
