Windows Dev: iPad beginning of the end for Windows dominance?

Posted: 24 May 2010 11:43 AM PDT

Brad Wardell is CEO of Stardock and a well known Windows developer who has just spent 3 weeks with the iPad and been impressed with its instant-on capabilities for email, rss, web browsing, video watching, social networking, and otherwise consuming content to the extent he thinks it may spell the beginning of the end for desktop Windows dominance.

I love my ThinkPad T400. But when I go to it, I have to pray whether it'll come out of sleep. If it does come out of sleep, it'll be slow. Maybe it will be out of batteries. Who knows. What I do know is that it's far too slow as a consumer device. Netbooks are even worse. It seems like such a little thing – instant on. But it's the difference between a DVR and a VCR in terms of leap of effective functionality.

He also likes that developers can make a lot of cool $2 apps. His take away:

The 3 things I mention here are so outshine the Windows PC experience that if Microsoft doesn't get off its duff and start addressing them soon then I predict Windows will become purely a content creation device whose content is primarily consumed elsewhere. There's really no excuse that in 2010, Windows is in the shape its in (particularly with regard to instant on).

I use Mac far more than Windows these days, but if I’m not doing hardcore content creation, I’m closing the lid and picking up my iPad. It’s just that convenient.

OmniGraffle for iPad – app review

Posted: 24 May 2010 10:48 AM PDT

OmniGraffle for iPad is a great application for creating workflow diagrams, organizational charts and more. At work I use Microsoft’s Visio to create workflow diagrams pertaining to software implementations. I now have almost the exact same functionality in my iPad.

The layout is very similar to Apple’s own iWork suite for iPad (and OmniGroup’s other iPad offering, OmniGraphSketcher) in that you swipe between open documents and can easily create or delete documents from the same screen. If you have used OmniGraffle on the Mac or Visio on Windows you will be instantly familiar with the interface once you have created a document. The top right corner has all of your stencils, drawing tools and properties of the objects you are working with. In the top left you have control over layers for your diagram. For this review, I am going to cover the simpler aspects of OmniGraffle so you understand at a high level what it does. Advanced users will revel in the other aspects.

To begin drawing, open the stencil group your want and drag an object to the grid. This can be done in portrait or landscape. From there you have almost limitless choices: color, line thickness, rotation, curve edges, shadows and so on. After placing a few objects in your drawing you can connect them with the connector stencils. Again, drag to the drawing and connect. The properties for lines are the same as other objects but you can add different types of arrows and even branch the arrows out. OmniGraffle for iPad can also use third party stencils, but no guarantees. These stencils should be added via iTunes.

So now you have several objects in your drawing and you want to change the properties of all of them, perhaps change the fill color. How do you accomplish this? Very, very, very easily. All you have to do is tap and hold the first object, then tap subsequent objects. Any object you touch will become a group for editing. You can then apply any changes you like to those objects; colors, line thickness or style, just about anything. It is awesome to have this power at your fingertips and it is a shame OmniGroup does not have templates available for the user to edit since changing properties are so easy to do. OmniGroup has suggested they may add templates in future release of the app.

It is important to note that OmniGraffle gives you excellent placement tools and control over your drawing. You can add, edit or duplicate layers in your drawing and activate snap to grid so you can precisely position every object placed.

The single biggest drawback for this wonderful application is that unless you already use the Mac version of OmniGraffle, it is difficult to share with other types of applications. Exporting options include: send .graffle in email, send email PDF, copy as image and send to photos. There is not an XML or Visio export at this time unfortunately.

I could go on about all of the fantastic features of OmniGraffle and for a 1.0 product launch with iPad and I very excited for the future of this application for the iPad. OmniGroup says that they have a lot of plans to enhance this app and they are coming soon. The short development time did not lend itself for adding a lot of features at launch (though I still think they did an amazing job) For business, this has to be one of my favorite applications.

Steve Jobs: “Not a chance” Android will surpass iPhone

Posted: 24 May 2010 07:47 AM PDT

Steve Jobs is once again putting finger to touchscreen to jot down tersely worded replies, this time on whether or not Google’s Android will leap frog the iPhone and whether or not the WWDC 2010 keynote will bring the rain.

First question:

Are google taking the [p1$$]? I hope you have some good WWDC announcements to blow them out the water?

Jobs’ answer:

You won’t be disappointed.

Sent from my iPhone

Second question:

Do you believe Google is surpassing you guys [...]?

Jobs’ answer:

Not a chance.

Regardless of your personal proclivities when it comes to iPhone or Android, no one can deny that the competitive smartphone landscape has become a whole lot more fun. (Well, except for everyone who isn’t Apple or Google at the moment).

We ask again, was Google smart to rile up one Steve P. Jobs this close to the WWDC keynote?

iPhone at work: Inner-city high school teacher

Posted: 24 May 2010 07:39 AM PDT

How does an inner-city high school teacher in Alabama use her iPhone to get the job done and what iPhone apps help get her through her day? TiPb’s iPhone at work contest aims to bring you just such slices of the iPhone life. Here’s Alli’s answer and as a small token of thanks we’re sending her a $20 iTunes gift certificate. If you want to see your name up on the TiPb home page and get a gift certificate all your own, head on over to the TiPb iPhone Forum and share your story now!

Once upon a time there was an inner city high school in lower Alabama. The children there all believed themselves to be the center of the universe. So it always came as quite a shock when their beloved French teacher told them that the US dollar was not used throughout the civilized world. Fortunately for these children, said beloved French teacher used WorldMate on her iPhone and was quickly able to find the current exchange rates for most currencies. This made it much more fun to window shop online and find out how much things would cost in real money.

These same children were also subject to school-wide initiatives such as DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). Because it was school-wide, the teachers were expected to play along. Thank heavens for the Nook reader on the iPhone. That old French teacher always had something to read and was happy to drop everything for it.

The children may not have liked taking tests, but our favorite teacher loves giving them. And not for the reason you may think…although, yes, she does have a bit of a sadistic streak. However, testing meant that she could stand in the back of the room and play Words With Friends!

After testing, it was common for our very favorite teacher in the world to whip out her iPhone and play some contemporary French music for her not so little learners. And she has been known to toss that iPhone under her Elmo document projector and show a music video or two.

Of course, this particular teacher was not just an excellent teacher, but the school’s Go To Gal for all things tech. It was not unusual for her to receive a cry for help from colleagues and administrators at any time for any reason. And as often as not, the cry for help would go out, and the “victim” would wander away from his classroom/office. Ascendo Data Vault to the rescue. Here we find all the passwords for most everyone in the building, along with administrator passwords for both computers and systems. Everyone wondered how she did it all.

Email? Pedestrian. Phone calls? Run of the mill. Except – Voice Central from Black Swan handled her Google Voice number so that students could only disturb her when she allowed it. And because a teacher’s job is never done, students called and sent text messages all day and all night!

But at the end of the day, it’s nice to flip that mute switch and know there will be silence until the iPhone’s alarm rings at 5:00 the next morning.

Are you a teacher? How do you use your iPhone to get you through the day? What apps get your job done?

Apple announces Steve Jobs to keynote WWDC 2010

Posted: 24 May 2010 06:55 AM PDT

Apple today announced that Steve Jobs would be kicking off their World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC 2010) with a keynote address Monday, June 7, at 9am PT where he’s widely expected to announce the iPhone HD/iPhone 4G.

They also remind us that WWDC 2010 sold out in a record 8 days, and with its decidedly iPhone OS focus this year and competitive pressures this year, we should be in for one heck of a show.

What else are we going to see, MobileMe 2.0, iTunes.com, Apple TV running iPhone OS, Verizon, Sprint, TV subscriptions? Give us your biggest, best, craziest predictions. It’s fun time.

And cue the iPhone HD/iPhone 4G on Sprint rumors

Posted: 24 May 2010 05:35 AM PDT

Sprint_iPhone

With the iPhone HD/iPhone 4G just around the corner and all the talk about AT&T finally losing exclusivity, it only stands to reason rumors of Sprint getting the device would also start to grow louder.

Just like with Verizon and even T-Mobile’s funky GSM bands, we’re sure Apple could technologically do it, but whether or not they could come to financial terms — and more important when is less predictable. Sprint isn’t doing as well as Verizon or AT&T, however, so they might be far more open to the type of control Apple would insist upon to get the deal done.

If it does happen, count us among those who think a WWDC 2010 announcement is less likely, with AT&T getting a short period of exclusivity with Apple’s 4th generation iPhone, and other US carriers coming online in the fall, red, yellow, and perhaps even magenta all.

And if not, hey, Sprint’s still got that commercial to tide them over.
