If you have an iPad, iPod touch, or anything else, on order from Apple and want to check the status online, we have some bad news for you — Apple has take their online order status down for the day.

My iPad 3G order, for example, just says Apple is updating their system and I can come back Sunday, May 16th.

Steve Jobs: iPad promises freedom from porn

Posted: 15 May 2010 02:11 PM PDT

In the bizarro world in which we might live, this late-night exchange between Gawker/Valleywag’s Ryan Tate and Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, where we’re promised a world free of porn, hardly even surprises any more.

Well, except that Jobs engages and responds far longer than I’d have figured he would. Since it’s long and provided in graphic form, we’ll just paraphrase the highlights and you can hit the read link for the whole screen-capped exchange:

Tate: Would Dylan think the iPad was a revolution, freedom?

Jobs:Yep, freedom from data theft, from battery trashing, from porn.

Tate: Why not let Wired do a cross-compiled Flash app. Porn is fine! My wife would agree!

Jobs: Wired is doing a Cocoa app. You’ll care about porn when you have kids.

Tate: Why should Wired have to do Cocoa. Time is doing a $#!tty PDF port. And Apple would f**k Gawker on app approval. At least [Google] is fair about what gets indexed.

Tate: PS: I’m not a porn fiend.

Jobs: No one has to make an iPad app but it appears Wired wants to. It’ll be better in the end because it’s native. Why are you so bitter? You don’t have to buy or develop or publish on iPads.

Tate: I’m disappointed to see its all the same revenge power bull$#!t.

Tate: PS: I don’t like Apple’s pet police force literally kicking in my co-workers’ doors. [Reference to Jason Chen of Gizmodo).

Jobs: You are so misinformed. You believe erroneous blogger reports. We're just doing what we can to make (and preserve) the user experience. You can disagree but our motives are pure. And what have you done that's so great?

Would have been funnier if Jobs ended the exchange with Gawker thusly: "Educate yourself. Launch Safari for Porn. Bazinga."

Steve Jobs: WWDC 2010 focusing on iPhone OS, normal cycle, no hidden meaning, move along

Posted: 15 May 2010 01:49 PM PDT

If you’re curious as to why IT tracks are gone, Mac tracks are limited, and Apple Design Awards are restricted to the iPhone and iPad for WWDC 2010, there are few people better equipped to answer you than Steve Jobs, CEO and Chief Customer Service Rep, of Apple Inc:

The email:

Is there any particular reason Apple has dropped the Design Awards for the Mac? Any plans to have them again in the future?

The Steve Jobs response:

We are focusing primarily (though not exclusively) on iPhone OS this year. Maybe next year we will focus primarily on the Mac. Just the normal cycle of things. No hidden meaning here.

This of course since iPhone OS 4 is debuting at WWDC, and Mac OS X 10.7 likely is not.

BabyBump pregnancy tracker for iPhone – app review

Posted: 15 May 2010 08:05 AM PDT

BabyBump is a pregnancy tracking application for the iPhone, and excellent for both mothers- and dads-to-be or anyone interested in following someone’s pregnancy.

The home screen of BabyBump displays your chosen avatar, name, how many weeks and days you are along in your pregnancy, what trimester you’re in, and how many days left until your due date. BabyBump is divided into 8 different sections:

  • Weekly info – This is my favorite section. BabyBump gives the approximate length and weight of your baby and compares his/her size to a fruit or vegetable. It also provides information about your Baby’s developmental stage, what to expect with your body, and a health tip.
  • Journal – Here is where can record your weight, waist size, moods, and appointments. You can view charts of your weight and waist changes.
  • Photos – A place to store photos.
  • Birth – This is an excellent section of BabyBump. There is a very tasteful and informative video of the birth process, a list of newborn essential items that you need for Baby’s arrival, and a checklist of your birth plan. When your baby is born, come to this section to create a quick birth announcement and send directly to Twitter, Facebook, and email.
  • Kick counter – A nice timer to record kick sessions.
  • Contractions – A similar counter to record contractions.
  • Baby names – An organized list of 1000 boy and 1000 girl names. You can store a list of favorite names and add any names that aren’t on the list.
  • Community – This is a forums board. There are many different forum categories including a section for dads!

I have been using BabyBump since December and have seen multiple updates and improvements in the past months. BabyBump is an excellent iPhone companion for pregnancy; in fact, it’s a must-have app for anyone pregnant.

[$4.99 - iTunes link]

Pros

  • Weekly updates on your baby’s development
  • Charts of your weight and waist size
  • Share via Facebook, Twitter, or email
  • Active forums

  • Information under “Body” and “Health Tip” are sometimes rather repetitive.
