Apple posts pro-tips on how to best move your Mac Keynote presentations to iPad

Apple wants you to get the most of your Keynote presentations when you move them from the Mac to the iPad, and they’ve put a Knowledge Base article to show you just how to do it.

From recommended themes to page sizes, fonts to image formats (PNG if you’re curious), to compressing the bits out of the various elements to keep the file size small enough for the iPad’s anemic memory.

If you live in Keynote on the Mac and the iPad, put these pro tips to use and let us know how they work for you!

Police investigating iPhone HD/iPhone 4G incident

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 02:30 PM PDT

iphone_law-and-order

The circumstances surrounding that iPhone HD/iPhone 4G prototype that surfaced online this week are now officially being looked into by local law enforcement:

Apple has spoken to local police about the incident and the investigation is believed to be headed by a computer crime task force led by the Santa Clara County district attorney’s office, the source said. Apple’s Cupertino headquarters is in Santa Clara County, about 40 miles south of San Francisco.

None of the parties directly involved have commented yet, and seriously we don’t expect them to at this point since anything they say could literally be used against them.

All we know is that this will make a heckuva sequel to Pirates of Silicon Valley. Wonder if Noah Wiley still has that black turtleneck…

How do you share photos on your iPhone?

The iPhone has a built in camera and with its always-on internet connectivity, it’s a great way to share your pictures with friends, families, colleagues, and the world.

  • Send via mail. The classic iPhone way to send photos is through email. Just choose a picture, multi-select up to five and tap Share, or copy and paste a dozen or so right into the body of your message and send away. (Pro tip: the share button compresses your photos into smaller files for easier transport, pasting them in keeps them in full size for higher quality). This is also great if you’re sharing with someone who has a computer, since Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix — almost everything! — has an email client to receive them.
  • Send via MMS. Yes, the iPhone finally has MMS so the same way you send photo via mail you can now send them via the Messages SMS/MMS app as well. This is the best option if you’re sending to another phone, especially a feature phone that doesn’t have email.
  • Upload them to galleries. The iPhone will let you upload to Apple’s own (subscription required) MobileMe gallery. You can also upload to the popular Flickr site, and there are (of course) apps for that.
  • Post them to a social network. If one-to-one is too few, and one-to-many sounds more like it, you can share your photos with your friends, your followers, or the whole wide world through your favorite social networks. Facebook is obviously huge here, with the app letting you upload and comment (when it works!) on photos. Thanks to integration with TwitPics and other, similar services, many popular Twitter clients like Twitterrific, Tweetie, TwitBit, etc. let you post pictures to your Twitter timeline for your followers to enjoy (and tweet back about).
  • Hand them your iPhone. And for your non-computer friends, you can just launch the Photo app and pass them your iPhone. The modern equivalent of sneaker-net, after a few moments even your least tech-savvy family member will be swiping, pinching, and otherwise enjoying your camera work right into the palm of their hand.

And now Google Maps Navigation might NOT be coming to iPhone…

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 07:55 AM PDT

navigation 2

No sooner did the UK announcement of Google Maps Navigation bring word that an iPhone version would follow… some day, then Google goes into disaster recovery mode and says, um, uh… maybe not:

“We did not say we would bring it to iPhone, we said to date we’ve had it on Android and that in the future it may come to other platforms but did not confirm this will be coming to iPhone at all.”

In all fairness, it’s likely far more complicated to get Google Maps Navigation on the iPhone because, while Google can do what they want on their own Android Platform, Apple builds the Maps UI on the iPhone and controls the App Store, and that means Google and Apple likely have to work together to get this done and delivered. They’ve done that in the past with the built-in Street View and the separate Google Mobile app, but utterly failed to do it with Latitude, for example. (Never mind the colossal cluster-frak that was Google Voice).

But none of that means Google PR shouldn’t get it together. Maybe navigate over to a nice cup of coffee, hash things out, and then get back to us?

Quick Review: Bento for iPad

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 04:30 AM PDT

Splash Screen

Bento for iPad [$4.99- iTunes Link] is a fantastic database option for users of Filemaker’s Bento for Mac. It is a fast and simple database application for capturing just about anything from invoices to party planning to recipes.

I have been using Bento for Mac and iPhone for a while now. I was very excited to get the iPad version. Bento looks great. There are elegant themes that make Bento appear like a leather- bound book or clipboard. You can create a database on the fly from one of the supplied templates and sync it back to your Mac and iPhone. If you want, you can even make a database from scratch right on the iPad. When creating your database you have a choice of several fields including checkbox, choice, number, text and several more. Adding these fields to your new database couldn’t be easier; click the pencil icon and drag the field to the workspace. Once placed on the screen, choose that fields properties. One of the more impressive features I found was the ability to add a Media field and insert a picture directly from Saved Photos on the iPad. There is a nice shadow effect behind the image and it looks really good.

Overall I am very pleased with the iPad version of Bento. The one feature that I would really like to see would be the ability to either export or send via email a record from Bento; there is currently no option to export data from Bento for iPad.

If you have an iPad and need to have a database with you, you will love Bento. Anyone from parents managing their kids schedule to a small business can use the portability and power Bento has to offer. For only $4.99, you are getting a huge value.  If you aren’t the creative type, you can always download templates from Bento’s Template Exchange.

Check out the Video and Gallery after the break!

Free Google Maps Navigation coming to iPhone… eventually

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 08:33 PM PDT

what_google_navigation_means

Hey, maybe free Google Maps Navigation for iPhone is what Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt were confabbing about over quinti-venti-lattes? Okay, maybe not but as part of the UK Google Maps Navigation roll out, they did once again say the envy-worthy, currently Android-only service would indeed be coming to the iPhone…

…they just still haven’t said when.

Psst, fella, we’ve got this huge iPhone OS 4 update coming this summer, how about then?

[via MacUser, thanks Chad!]
