RIM CEO: No market for iPad, iPhone not popular Posted: 16 Apr 2010 03:09 PM PDT According to Electronista, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis gave a keynote address at the TD Newcrest Technology Conference where he decided to dismiss Apple’s iPad as not having a market and their iPhone as not being popular. Seriously, we couldn’t make this stuff up. In all fairness he included all tablets and full touchscreen devices in general, so we suspect he was basing his opinions on the rumored PadBerry and RIM’s experience with the BlackBerry Storm series. Apple’s experience is 85,000,000 iPhone OS devices sold to date. [Electronista via DF] RIM CEO: No market for iPad, iPhone not popular is a story by TiPb. AT&T blocks June holidays again — countdown to iPhone HD Posted: 16 Apr 2010 11:51 AM PDT BGR claims AT&T has begun their yearly tradition of blocking employee holidays for the month of June in anticipation of the 4th generation iPhone (not iPhone 4G but possibly iPhone HD) launch. A June block suggests a launch that could be as early as last year’s June 17 iPhone 3GS affair, but is also consistent with previous years’ late-June releases. We’ve already seen some leaks — and lots of fakes and mock ups — so just consider this another sign of what we all know is coming — iPhone 2010. And the crazy is sure to come with it! Posted: 16 Apr 2010 10:24 AM PDT PCalc [$9.99 - iTunes link] is one of the leading calculators for iPhone and now its computing power has been updated (as in universal binary) to include support for iPad. PCalc is an (optional) RPN calculator that is great for scientists, engineers, programmers, and students. It includes a list of common constants, an ample amount of conversions, a paper tape that can be shared via email, and support for binary, hexadecimal, and octal calculations. You can also customize the look of PCalc with different themes and digit fonts. The interface on iPad is rather beautiful in both landscape and portrait. The buttons are nice and big and everything is easy to read. Navigation between the menus is a much more pleasant experience than on the iPhone. To see PCalc in action, watch the video after the break!

Norway’s Prime Minister, NSA’s 3-star General — iPad users! Posted: 16 Apr 2010 10:00 AM PDT Looks like the heads of Norway, and the American National Security Agency (NSA), have both gotten their hands on Apple’s new iPad and — they like it. First it was Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stotlenberg, who was snapped using an iPad while waiting out the volcanic ash-imposed flight delays back to Europe. Looks like he was also sporting Apple’s iPad case, which based on our quick review isn’t exactly the best choice to avoid nasty ash stains… Still, watching an entire nation being run on an iPad — the future is here. Speaking of — and on — the future of nations and computing, Forbes reports that current NSA boss and 3-star general Keith Alexander (who may soon be 4-star general, in charge of US Cyber Command) testified that he had an iPad as well, and that it was “wonderful”. While we don’t generally cover iPhone sightings here on TiPb anymore because (sorry sibling sites), they’re pretty much mainstream and in half the TV shows and hands we see these days, early political adoption struck us as beyond cool. Anyone else running anything else interesting on their iPads? [Thanks to the Reptile for the tip!] Norway’s Prime Minister, NSA’s 3-star General — iPad users! is a story by TiPb. Quick Review: Epicurious for iPad Posted: 16 Apr 2010 06:22 AM PDT Epicurious [Free - iTunes Link] from CondeNet is one of the best cooking apps you can get on the iPad. It has almost everything you could ask for including over 28,000 recipes, with the number growing daily. The interface is beautiful with the recipes neatly organized depending on main ingredient, health restrictions, nationality, what’s new, and more. The cookbook section of Epicurious is even easier to navigate on the larger iPad screen. You can have the recipe instructions displayed on the side while looking at the ingredients, photos, user reviews, and nutritional information. There is even a little bookmark so you can keep your place as you look at other sections. Finding what you want in Epicurious is also a breeze. It has a search tool which allows you to find your next meal by keyword. On the sidebar you can simply click or un-click ingredients to filter the results further and match any dietary restrictions or keep the choices narrowed to just the ingredients you have in the house. Epicurious also has a wonderful shopping list button and if you want to share your latest recipe with your friends you can email it. For screenshots and video of this must-have iPad cooking app, stay with us after the break!

UPDATED: Pulitzer Prize winning satirist can’t get into App Store Posted: 16 Apr 2010 05:57 AM PDT UPDATE: According to the WSJ, Apple has contacted Fiore:
Preferential perhaps but not uncommon. Several controversial app rejections have been reconsidered when publicity brought them to the attention of higher-ups at Apple. Unfortunately, the “review team rejects, executive team reconsiders” is not a scalable or likely desirable strategy for Apple. ORIGINAL: Mark Fiore, the first online journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize (for editorial cartooning), has had his iPhone app, NewsToons rejected from the App Store because it violates Apple’s policy against “ridiculing public figures”. This follows similar rejections of Bobble Rep, which contained political caricatures by Tom Richmond, and MSNBC.com Cartoons by Daryl Cage. Both of those apps eventually made it into the App Store, and it’s possible NewsToons will as well (though Fiore isn’t going to bother fighting on its behalf), but the situation highlights another problem with the highly regulated store model. There will always be cases where legitimate artistic and/or social expression gets caught up in policies designed to exclude extreme, abusive, or otherwise inappropriate content for the general audience. Just as all nudity isn’t porn (or isn’t intended to titillate), political satire isn’t the same as political attack or public ridicule for partisan purposes. And just like rejection can have a chilling effect on developers, it can have a chilling effect on the press that holds their editorial freedom near-sacred. We’ve seen signs of Apple considering an Explicit category for the “sexy apps” removed from the App Store earlier in the year. A satire category sounds less wieldy, however and points out once again the types of problems Apple will have with both content creators and simple scale as the App Store continues to race towards 200,000 apps.
