iChat video motherlode of code: moderators, chat room, encryption, more

iChat video strings

9to5Mac has hit the motherlode of code references when it comes to iPhone 4.0 iChat video secret strings and references, including what looks like moderators, chat room, encryption, and more.

Presumably moderation would let Apple prevent their hosting of ChatRoulette-style not-safe-for-families fun, especially if iChat hooks into the Game Center social network.

This is how it was with video recording and iPhone 3.0 on iPhone 3GS, so we’re getting more and more confident this is what will be come this summer with iPhone 4.0 and iPhone G4 (not iPhone 4G!), hopefully with a front-facing chat cam. iPod touch G4 and iPad G2 would also need camera upgrades (in their cases to actually, finally, getting cameras of any kind), likely in September 2010 and March 2011 respectively.

Quick Review: Air Hockey for iPad

Posted: 10 Apr 2010 05:45 AM PDT

Air Hockey for iPad

Air Hockey [$0.99 - iTunes Link] by Acceleroto is now a universal binary that works on both your iPhone and iPad (that’s right, pay once, play everywhere). It offers fluid air hockey action, simple controls, and a lot of fun.

For more about Air Hockey from Acceleroto as well as video of my son and I playing please stay with us after the break!

Air Hockey lets you choose one or two pucks and one and two players. If you do not have anyone to play with, one player mode gives you a computer opponent with varying difficulty, from kiddie to INSANE. With the larger size of the iPad, however, a human opponent becomes more more do-able, and much more fun.

Take a peek at the video where I play with my son in a two puck game. Who won? watch to find out, but also watch to see how much fun it is.

iPhone 4.0 folder magic: hide built-in apps you don’t use

While iPhone 4.0 still won’t let you delete built-in Apple apps you don’t use (looking at you Weather, Stocks, Compass, etc.!), with the new Folders functionality you can group them together hide them away, effectively wasting only one icon space instead of many.

Just hold your finder down on an offending app until it begins to jiggle then drag it on top of a second offender and voila!, a Folder is born. Name it something cathartic, then start dropping the rest of the worst in until they’re all safely hidden away. Set the Folder icon in the middle of screen somewhere down the line and forget it.

And there you go, an almost annoyance free home screen!

Tweetie to become official Twitter for iPhone

Posted: 09 Apr 2010 06:56 PM PDT

Hot off the presses from the official Twitter blog, we learn they’re buying Atebit’s Tweetie, renaming it Twitter for iPhone, and making it free. Atebit’s founder, Loren Brichter, will become a key member of their mobile team. What brought this on?

Careful analysis of the Twitter user experience in the iTunes AppStore revealed massive room for improvement. People are looking for an app from Twitter, and they’re not finding one. So, they get confused and give up. It’s important that we optimize for user benefit and create an awesome experience.

Twitter also states they will eventually launch Tweetie for iPad with Brichter’s help. The Atebits blog presents his thoughts on his journey so far and the future ahead.

Congratulations to all involved, we look forward to it.
