Reminder: We won’t see all iPhone 4.0 features until WWDC in June

While Apple announced 7 tent-pole features for iPhone 4.0 including multitasking, folders, mail enhancements, iBooks, Enterprise features, Game Center social network, and iAd mobile advertising platform, it’s important to remember we won’t get the final feature set for iPhone 4.0 until Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) this June.

Last year Apple showed off a lot of features for iPhone 3.0 in March, but it wasn’t until WWDC that we saw features specific to the new iPhone 3GS hardware — video recording, VoiceOver, compass, Voice Memo app, etc.

If iPhone G4 (not 4G!), also likely introduced at WWDC in June, has extra hardware like a front-facing camera, we won’t see Mobile iChat video announced until then…

Apple announces iPhone 4.0, beta today, iPhone/iPod touch in summer, iPad in fall

Apple has announced iPhone 4.0, available for developers in beta form starting today and arriving for iPhone and iPod touch users sometime this summer, and iPad users in the fall. Highlights of the latest version of the mobile OS that powers the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad include the following 7 “tentpoles”:

  1. Multitasking (iPhone 3GS/iPod touch G3 only)
  2. Folders with intelligent naming
  3. Mail with unified inbox, multiple Exchange accounts, threaded messages
  4. iBooks for iPhone
  5. Increased Enterprise support in iPhone 4.0
  6. Game Center social network
  7. iAd mobile advertising platform

iPhone 4.0 will also bring iPhone 3.2 (iPad) features like spell checking, Bluetooth keyboard support, Home Screen wallpaper, a 5x digital zoom (and tap to focus for video), as well as 1500 new API for developers (like — finally! — calendar access!)

How’s that list looking to you?

Apple shows off iAd mobile advertising platform

Posted: 08 Apr 2010 11:02 AM PDT

apple-iphone-os4_205 Steve Jobs thinks current mobile advertising sucks and Apple’s answer for iPhone 4.0 is iAd, an HTML5 platform that gives developers a 60% cut of revenue and provides… what basically looks like ads as apps.

Making ads enjoyable would be a huge step forward for the often interruptive and annoying industry. But can Apple do it?

Apple unleashes Game Center social network

While third parties have developed several of their own social gaming networks for the iPhone and iPad, Apple entered the space themselves today with iPhone 4.0 and their Game Center Social Network. Features include inviting friends, matchmaking, leader-boards, and achievements. And because it’s built into the OS, developers get it “for free”. Hard to compete with that…

Continuing the long journey begun with iPhone 2.0, Apple has once again raised the bar on Enterprise support for iPhone 4.0 adding better data protection, mobile device management, wireless app distribution, multiple exchange accounts, Exchange Server 2010 support, and SSL VPN support.

More as this develops!

Apple updates Mail in iPhone 4.0 with unified inbox, multiple Exchange accounts, threaded messages

As part of the iPhone 4.0 announcement today, Apple introduced an updated Mail app that includes (as rumored) support for a unified inbox (so all your new home, work, etc. email shows up in one place). Also introduced was threaded conversation, multiple Exchange accounts (hello Exchange + Google Sync), and fast inbox switching.

Does that solve all our iPhone email woes?
