iTunes 9.1 now separates universal binaries, iPhone + iPod touch, and iPad apps in Album View

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 02:09 PM PDT

iTunes 9.1’s Album View provides an easy way to sort your universal binaries (iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad) apps from your iPhone and iPod touch only, and iPad only apps by separating them out in just that order.

It’s a small touch but a nice one for those of us who fret about just such organization minutia.

SHAPE Services sneak previews IM+, RDM+, iDisplay for iPad

SHAPE Services, who you may know from IM+ or Business Card Reader for the iPhone shared some screenshots of their upcoming apps with us, including: IM+ for iPad, RDM+ for iPad, and iDisplay.

  • IM+ is, of course, their popular instant messenger app for the iPhone scaled up for the big 1024×768 pixel iPad screen. Supports MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk, AIM, Jabber, ICQ, Facebook, MySpace, Skype and Twitter.

  • RDM+ is Remote Desktop for Mobiles, which will let you access your PC, even through NAT and Firewalls. Just imagine sitting at your sofa with your office or den computer magically held in your iPad display.

  • iDisplay, which will follow later, lets you turn your iPad or iPhone into a an extra Mac side monitor. A universal binary, it will automatically detect if you’re running it on iPad or on a smaller iPhone or iPod touch screen, and let you span your desktop to fill the extra space. Think of it as a dual display, only you don’t have to buy another screen — just use your Apple mobile!

While anything can change between now and Saturday, we hope to see at least a couple of these apps on the iPad ASAP.

Screen shots after the break!

If you were wondering exactly what sites out there are geared specifically for iPad without Adobe’s Flash, be sure to visit the new page that Apple has created which displays all of the current “iPad ready” websites.

The current crop of sites are as follows:

  • TIME
  • Sports Illustrated
  • New York Times
  • Vimeo
  • Major League Baseball
  • The White House
  • Virgin
  • Flickr
  • People
  • TED
  • CNN
  • Reuters

That’s quite an impressive list that Apple has come up with there but we want our readers opinions here, does Apple have enough pull to topple Flash or are they simply fighting a battle they can not win? Sound off in the comments below!

Time Magazine cover story: Steve Jobs, Apple, and iPad

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 08:20 AM PDT

time-100401

Time Magazine has given their April 12, 2010 cover to Steve Jobs, and features a massive interview of Apple’s CEO alongside design SVP Jonathan Ive, marketing SVP Phil Schiller, and internet (iTunes, MobileMe, App Store) SVP Eddy Cue by none other than Stephen Fry. (He also talks to publishers, educators, developers, and more).

Fry meeting with Steve Jobs:

His pleasure in showing me the Winnie the Pooh iBook bundled with every iPad is unaffected and engaging. He demonstrates how the case can be used as a lectern and as a stand. “I think the experience of using an iPad is going to be profound for many people,” he says. “I really do. Genuinely profound.” That rings a bell. “I’ve heard it said that this is the device for you,” I reply. “The one that will change everything.” “When people see how immersive the experience is,” Jobs says, “how directly you engage with it … the only word is magical.”

Jonathan Ive on the missing features:

“In many ways, it’s the things that are not there that we are most proud of,” he tells me. “For us, it is all about refining and refining until it seems like there’s nothing between the user and the content they are interacting with.”

And Fry’s final thoughts:

It is possible that the public will not fall on the iPad, as I did, like lions on an antelope. Perhaps they will find the apps and the iBooks too expensive. Maybe they will wait for more fully featured later models. But for me, my iPad is like a gun lobbyist’s rifle: the only way you will take it from me is to prise it from my cold, dead hands. One melancholy thought occurs as my fingers glide and flow over the surface of this astonishing object: Douglas Adams is not alive to see the closest thing to his Hitchhiker’s Guide that humankind has yet devised.

Read the full article, it’s well worth it, and let us know how you think Fry did with his thus-far unmatched time and access to Apple’s iPad brain trust.

Apple iTunes Music streaming service unlikely to launch prior to 3rd Quarter 2010

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:35 AM PDT

itunes

CNET is reporting that Apple is planning to unveil their iTunes music streaming service at least by the third quarter of this year. After Apple acquired Lala back in December, it was rumored that the company was entertaining the idea of a streaming music service that would allow users to back-up and access their music library from any device with internet connectivity.

“Music industry sources told CNET this week Apple has informed label managers that a streaming music service is unlikely to be ready before the third quarter. It will be a disappointment for iTunes fans who have been speculating as to when Apple might use music site Lala–which Apple acquired in December–for its streaming expertise to launch a cloud-based music service.”

This is definitely disappointing to hear and if you are looking for even more bad news CNET is also reporting that Apple “hasn’t done much” with video content for iPad either with the exception of sending iPads to certain movie executives. But we’re not greedy, we’d be happy with Hulu and Netflix streaming

Wolfram Alpha for iPhone reduced to $1.99!

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 06:06 AM PDT

Wolfram Alpha

WolframAlpha has finally come to the realization that $49.99 is an unreasonable price for their app and have reduced the price to… wait for it… $1.99! On top of that, if you purchased WolframAlpha on an earlier date, you’re eligible for a refund.

In October, 2009, WolframAlpha was released at $49.99 which was difficult to understand since their iPhone-optimized website was available for free through Safari. Two months later, the iPhone optimized version was removed and if you visited wolframalpha.com, a pop-up informed you that you could buy the app for “fully optimized mobile computable knowledge”. Now, Wolfram Alpha has completely reversed their strategy and not only substantially cut the price, but have also brought back the iPhone optimized site and are giving money back!

To be eligible for the refund, you must have purchased WolframAlpha on or before April 1, 2010 for $49.99 or the holiday price of $19.99. To make your claim, visit this site and provide screenshots of your UDID, purchase history, and account info. After verifying your info, Wolfram Alpha will issue you a gift card for $50 or $20 depending on how much you purchased the app for. I expected refunds would be for $48 and $18 to bring the price down to $1.99, but what Wolfram Alpha is really doing is giving early adopters $0.01 for having the app! The deadline to request a refund is May 3, 2010.

Now we must wonder if this new business model is going to work for them. Given estimates that they sold 10,000 copies prior to the price reduction, it will take a long time to break even much less earn a profit at the new price point. Could it be they’re now willing to give up money in exchange for market share? Is this a smart move?

Now that Wolfram Alpha is at a reasonable price, are you planning to pick up a copy? If so, let us know what you think!

Netflix, ABC, CBS, and maybe even Hulu coming to iPad!

Posted: 01 Apr 2010 05:17 AM PDT

netflix-and-abc-ipad-app

In that stream of 700 iPad apps revealed last night, Engadget noticed a few gems including Netflix and ABC, and with CBS doing the HTML5-video thing and Hulu once again being rumored, could content consumption nirvana finally be near?

Netflix is said to be a free app that will be ready by the April 3 iPad launch. You’ll be able to browse and manage your queue and stream movies and TV shows right to your iPad. No word on weather its Wi-Fi-only or 3G as well, and no word on whether an iPhone and iPod touch version is coming (ahem!)

ABC’s player is also said to be free but Wi-Fi bound. You’ll still get your Lost and Grey’s Anatomy fix direct from the network, however. Whether it will make into the iPad App Store by launch day is unknown, as is their monetization method (i.e. will there be commercials?)

CBS, according to the Wall Street Journal, is sticking with their web-based strategy of streaming HTML5 video through Mobile Safari and not making a dedicated app. Hey, maybe that at least will give iPhone and iPod touch owners equal access?

Hulu, which carries the last two remaining networks, NBC and FOX is still unclear but the New York Times once again gets our hopes up. It’s not all rosy, however, as the network nuts behind the scenes reportedly aren’t happy with revenue and want something like subscriptions bolted one. They better get their act together and quickly or their old world thinking will condemn the bright boys and girls at Hulu to last place in the brave new mobile media world…
