Wolfram Alpha to iPhone Users: Get Off our Web, Buy Our $50 App!

If you go to wolframalpha.com on your iPhone (or iPod touch), instead of an optimized version of their website, you now presented with an intercept pop-up advising you that you can go to the App Store and get your $50 premium experience on.

Were too many people not buying the app when they could get the web for free? And is this the best way for Wolfram Alpha to handle it? Let us know what you think, we already have an idea what they’ll say…

AT&T vs. Verizon — Turns Out There’s No Lawsuit for That!

Posted: 03 Dec 2009 12:49 PM PST

According to Business Insider, both AT&T and Verizon have decided to drop the lawsuits over Verizon’s hilarious controversial “Map for That” commercials. AT&T believed the commercials to be misleading, splitting hairs about 2.5G EDGE coverage and 3G HSPA, while Verizon believed the truth hurt (ouch).

Since the judge rejected AT&T’s request for an injunction, and Verizon will be continuing to air the ads, we’re guessing we know who blinked here… (And also guessing Luke Wilson and Apple will continue to fire back…)

(Insert canned soap opera music here!)

iPhone in China Not Selling So Well… Official Version at Least

iPhone 3G Bruce Lee

No big sales in China, it seems, and no big surprise given the low initial numbers we saw, and the prevalence — and huge pre-existing install base — of black and gray-market iPhones (with wifi!) smuggled into the country. And if that sounds apologist’ic, yeah, sorry. But iLounge is reporting:

Taobao.com, the largest Chinese e-commerce web site reports that it has sold only two 8GB iPhones and three 16GB iPhones since it began selling them on Nov 22nd.

So, sky fallen for the iPhone in China? Still falling? No one cares because they all have unlocked iPhones anyway?

iPod touch EasyPay POS May Soon Be Used by Other Retailers

Ever since Apple rolled out their iPod touch based EasyPay POS to some of it’s retail stores they have been flooded with inquires from other retailers looking to get in on the Apple goodness. It was just a a few short weeks ago that certain Apple retail stores ditched their crash prone Windows CE + stylus based EasyPay point-of-sale devices and since then it has raised the curiosity of other retailers.

“Since the debut of the iPod POS, inquires have been coming from all directions, including from end-user small businesses, larger chains and system integrators. Until now, Apple's response has been that the iPod POS is a proprietary product, unavailable for sale,” Allen said. “But now, tipsters say, Apple retail executives have asked the retail store business specialists to collect contact information from anyone who inquires about the iPod touch system, apparently to create a database of potential customers if Apple decides to commercialize the product.”

The EasyPay POS system is capable of handling all cash, credit, and debit transactions along with some product returns. Would this be an Apple-like move to sell this device for other retailers to use? Sound off in the comments!

Thursday Fun Links: Reflecting on iPhone-doubters Past

Posted: 03 Dec 2009 02:34 AM PST

Not sure if it’s the year winding down, or malaise with alternatives, but a variety of sites have begun once again re-listing the quotes of competing executives who doubted Apple or the iPhone had potential, staying power, or even any chance for success what-so-ever. 3 generations, 40 odd million units, 100,000 applications, and 2 billion downloads later, these revisitations include:
