$30 a Month iTunes TV Show Subscriptions for iPhone… and iTablet?

MediaMemo is hearing that Apple Internet exec, Eddy Cue, has been tasked with exploring a $30/month iTunes TV Show subscription service:

A so-called "over the top" service could theoretically rival the ones most consumers already buy from cable TV operators — if Apple is able to get enough buy-in from broadcast and cable TV programmers.

Disney, with Steve Jobs its largest shareholder, pops up as among the first to potentially get on board.

Unlimited TV on your iPhone, Mac/PC, Apple TV, and maybe… iTablet with one monthly fee. You want?

(Re: iTablet, sure would make a nifty announcement to go along with the iTablet, like movie rentals did at Macworld 2008 for Apple TV Take 2….)

Which Verizon Droid Feature Do You Most Want on the iPhone?

Posted: 02 Nov 2009 06:26 AM PST

Verizon and Motorola have taken their shots at the iPhone, and TiPb has offered some counter points, but truth be told there’s not a smartphone on the planet that’s anywhere close to perfect yet, so even our signature device, Apple’s iPhone, has plenty of room for improvement. Since Steve Jobs is a firm believer in “great artists steal”, which feature do you think Apple should consider stealing from the Droid for the next version of the iPhone?

(We’ve already asked for an iPhone HD going on a year now, and don’t get us started on notifications again…)

PCalc1.5Main

PCalc [$9.99 - iTunes link] has 30 promo codes to give away to TiPb readers willing to help them out with a little survey. Here’s the thing: since “free apps no longer have to stay free”, and in-app purchases are now available to everyone, they’re interested in knowing just which in-app purchasable features interest YOU.

Ready? Here’s what you need to do:

  • Download the free version of PCalc Lite [iTunes link]
  • Try it.
  • Rank the following features from the full version that you’d like to see made available as in-app purchases, in order of preference:
    1. More keyboard layouts with additional functions aimed at engineers and programmers.
    2. More themes, digit styles, and key click sounds.
    3. More unit conversions and constants.
    4. A virtual paper tape and display of memory registers.
    5. More advanced settings for controlling things like number of decimal places shown, thousands separators.
    6. Hex / octal / binary mode.
    7. Multi-line display and multiple memory support.
    8. A coupon code to save $9 on PCalc for Mac OS X.
  • Suggest one cool new calculating feature they’ve inexplicably forgotten to include so far (real or fantastic).
  • Email your feature ranking and new feature suggestion to survey[at]dragthing[dot]com
  • Best suggestions received in the next 24 hours will get a promo code for the full version of PCalc in return. (US App Store only — Apple’s rules, not ours.)

Orange UK iPhone Pricing Plans Just Say No to Price War

Orange UK iPhone Pricing

Orange UK is set to break O2’s iPhone exclusivity… if not their price points with the announcement of their pay monthly, pay as you go, and for business plans.

What did we notice off the top? Depending on how much you pay on contract or up front, your iPhone hardware cost can go down to as little as free or climb to as much as £539 for an iPhone 3GS on PAYG. (Also, PAYG plans named Monkey, Dolphin, Canary, Racoon, and Camel? Where’s John Cleese to “spokesperson” that when you need him…)

Unlimited internet and Wi-Fi, however, carry a “fair usage policy of 750MB/month” proviso, which looks rather pathetic next to unofficial US caps of 5GB. Good on them for not hiding it, but placing that paltry figure anywhere close to “unlimited” probably means they shouldn’t use “unlimited” to begin with.

Not much in terms of cutting O2’s pricing though. Maybe Vodafone will feel a bit more daring?

If you’re thinking of going Orange, check out the full pricing info and let us know if it’s what you expected, better, or worse?

Monday Fun Video: OWLE Hacks iPhone into Near-Broadcast Quality Video Rig

Posted: 02 Nov 2009 04:50 AM PST

Take on OWLE team, add a hack into the iPhone dock connector, and what do you get? According to TechCrunch:

The latest prototype that OWLE has developed, which is different than what they start shipping tomorrow, allows you to use lenses with depth of field and telephoto effects, XLR microphones (both wired and wireless microphones), stereo microphones and more. Basically, it allows you to plug in any professional audio equipment that filmmakers use, on your iPhone. The mics are plugged in through the 30 pin, and the telephoto lens was cobbled together.

RED likely need not be fearful… yet!
