Snow Leopard Virtual Keyboard Renews iTablet Mac Rumors

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 12:48 PM PDT

Rumors of an iTablet continue to gain steam while Apple boasts a metric ton of refinements for their new Mac OS X Snow Leopard release, including better performance and smaller footprint, then goes and adds a new virtual keyboard that just begs to be touched…

…Ah, yeah, here come the Mac OS X Snow Leopard on iTablet stories!

9to5Mac leads this latest charge with the keyboard while Cult of Mac points also to the new Dock Expose, and all new, all-touchable Stacks grid. (See Apple’s feature overview).

So, could Apple be making a Mac OS X iTablet, or is your money still on an iPhone OS X iTablet? Or could they really be making both?

The Competition: Microsoft Discontinues Previous Zunes, Marketing Exec

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 12:26 PM PDT

screen-shot-2009-09-02-at-32843-pm

On the eve of Microsoft releasing its new Zune HD platform (the one targeted at competing with the iPod touch), Windows Super-siter, Paul Thurrott is reporting that the still nascent plain vanilla Zune platform (the one targeted at competing with the iPod touch and classic) is being abandoned. (Shades of PlaysForSure?)

Likewise, the Wall Street Journal breaks word that Microsoft’s general manager of Zune marketing, Chris Stephenson is also being discontinued, leaving to take a position at Universal’s Interscope Geffen A&M Records.

The Zune HD admittedly looks like a more-than-compelling competitor to the 2007 iPod touch (the 2009 model, well have to see), and has bloggers strangely enthused, but it’s curious Microsoft is cutting support for previous players at the same time. Though Apple also believes them to be a dwindling market, rumor has it we’ll see camera-sporting iPod nano and classic come next Wednesday.

Could this actually be a sign of Microsoft gaining some much-needed focus? And will the logical, and still denied, ZunePhone be next? (And what would that mean for current Windows Mobile ODMs?)

(We’re still hoping for an XboxPhone instead!)

Digital Trends Podcast: Talking iPhone and Snow Leopard

Leif Iverson was kind enough to invite me back onto the Digital Trends Podcast to talk iPhone and Snow Leopard:

editor Rene Richie from the iPhone Blog gives us tips on the best way to upgrade, and what programs make best use of Snow Leopard's smaller OS footprint. Rene also talks about known bugs with some popular applications in Snow Leopard, and how the new OS could optimize mobile computing in sync with Apple's rumored tablet Mac. Read more about Snow Leopard in our complete guide.

5 days and almost as many installs later, and I’m more excited about Snow Leopard than any previous release, both what it is now and what it portents for the future of Mac and iPhone OS X. Anyone doubting that, strap on your geek and check out Siracusa’s massive Ars Technica review, especially the parts about LLVM, Blocks, Grand Central Dispatch, OpenCL, and QuickTime X.

The Competition: Nokia N900 Hands-On

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 10:57 AM PDT

Nokia’s latest latest and greatest, the N900, is being shown off at Nokia World, and it again has our own NokiaExpert, Matt Miller, all shades of excited.

While some have complained about it’s meager 3 rows of keys (3 rows too many for me, but I know many others like physical keyboards…) most are really excited about it’s Maemo (Linux-based) operating system, and it’s new user interface.

In fact, antonioj, who sent the link our way, thinks it might be enough to pressure Apple into refreshing the 2007-era iPhone UI…

We Want: “WhisperSync” for iPhone and iTunes

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 10:04 AM PDT

MobileMe WhisperSync

With Apple’s September 9, “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” event fast approaching, and its promises of new iTunes 9 social media and app management features, here’s something else, just like @sethclifford, we’d love to see added to the list: “WhisperSync”. More specifically, for MobileMe to do a little over-the-air syncing of our location in a podcast, audiobook, or lengthy video so we can switch between the iPhone, iPod touch, or iTunes and always be at the same location in our media, regardless of where we continue listening or watching.

We can do this now, of course, but it requires a tethered USB sync between our iPhone and/or iPod touch and our computer. Amazon’s Kindle, however, does this transparently and automagically over the air using WhisperSync, and yes, we want Apple to iClone it. (Well, we don’t care about the likely-trademarked name, we just want the tech!)

So, next time we finish our run and hit pause on our iPhone’s player, we can wash off, grab a tasty beverage, flop down into the couch, and keep listening right from our Apple TV.

How about it, Apple?

RexRegina Hamilton Case for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G

The RexRegina Hamilton Case [$44.95 - TiPb Store link] is hands down one of the finest crafted leather pouches I have used to date. While this particular type of case may only appeal to a certain crowd, I can not recommend it highly enough for those of you who are fans of the pouch case. For the full run-down read on after the break!

This RexRegina Hamilton case is a perfect fit for any business man or woman out there that is looking for a classy yet simple case to keep an iPhone protected. It is made from the finest leather available directly from the Tuscany region in Italy. And once you get the case in your hands you can instantly feel it’s high build quality.

rex_2

With it’s slim profile you can slide the case into a computer bag, briefcase, purse or pocket with ease. Within the first couple days of use the fit may feel a bit too snug for your liking but give it time, the leather will break in but not so much that the phone would easily fall out of the case. You can rest easy knowing that the fit is secure. Another nice feature is one that not many pouch cases actually have - access to the volume control and the ring/silent switch. The side height is designed to allow easy access to the controls, which is a welcome addition to a pouch case.

Like I mentioned early, these types of cases are not for everybody, but if you are someone who prefers high quality pouch cases it may be worth your while to give this case a try.

Dear AT&T: Summer’s Over, Where’s our MMS and Tethering?

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 07:32 AM PDT

iPhone MMS - AT&T Late Summer

The minute our iPhone calendars turned from August 31 to September 1, TiPb’s email box started getting many colorful variations of “Summer is over, where’s our [redacted redacted redacted... redacted!] MMS and tethering!

While Apple showed off the front-end for MMS and tethering back in March, released it along with iPhone 3.0 in June, and most of the rest of the world has been enjoying it ever since, AT&T is a notable, and increasingly infuriating exception. Late summer (and when is that exactly?), and that it will be no extra charge, is all they’ve said. And whether you personally would use MMS or not, right now you don’t even have that choice.

We’ve heard all the excuses, from AT&T’s network can barely handle the iPhone as-is, and MMS and especially tethering would bring it, crashing and burning, to its knees, to a rumor that AT&T had to manually turn on MMS for every single iPhone account on their system. We’ve also heard it may be announced as part of Apple’s September 9th event. That would be very late summer indeed.

But that’s all we’ve heard. There’s been no status update from AT&T that we can find, no attempt to keep their users in the loop, no expression of sympathy for the frustration their users are voicing (or emailing us!). AT&T is being almost Apple-esque in their lack of communications and for a company that’s in the communications business — and is charging high monthly rates to its consumers — that’s just not good enough.

Is it?

Updated Apple TV at “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” Special Music Event?

Posted: 02 Sep 2009 04:32 AM PDT

music_hero20080929

New Apple TV’s, whether it simply be a small bump to the internals (CPU, storage, etc.) or the mythical, rainbow and unicorn-tear soaked Apple PVR, are the latest rumours circulating in advance of Apple’s iTunes and iPod touch special music event, “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it“, scheduled for September 9.

Since TV’s aren’t rock and roll, odds are we aren’t going to see anything major in that — admittedly aging — product SKU, but since they do serve as an iTunes Music conduit, maybe Apple’s hobby might just get swept up in the song?

Most of this chatter comes again from analysts, so we’ll assuredly have to wait and see. Or we could just run a poll and see what you think…
