How to: Jailbreak/Unlock iPhone 3.0 - Mac OS X redsn0w Edition Posted: 23 Jun 2009 11:35 AM PDT Disclaimer - Neither TiPb nor I take any responsibility for any problems/issues/bricking/etc. that may occur while using this software to modify your iPhone. Please be aware of what you are doing. There has been a lot of buzz going on in the forums regarding jailbreaking the iPhone 3.0 software lately, and a lot of questions to go along with it!. Today we're going to take a deeper look at the exact steps you have to take to get your iPhone 3G with 3.0 jailbroken on your Mac. Let's get started, after the jump! Get the toolsFirst and foremost make sure your iPhone is updated to the 3.0 firmware. If you're not yet running 3.0, update via iTunes. All good? Okay, next make sure your iPhone is not connected to your Mac. Next you will need to download the following files:
Jailbreak ProcessNow double click on the redsn0w file you just download to the redsn0w application. You will then be prompted to select the 3.0 IPSW file you downloaded. Do as instructed now. Once it is successfully identified press next to continue. Now you will have to select whether you’d like Cydia, Icy, or both installed on your phone. You have to install at least one of them. Make sure your choices are checked and press next. *It seems some people are having issues with Cydia crashing instantaneously after launching it. So it may be wise to select Icy. Both apps essentially serve the same purpose. Next you will be connecting your iPhone 3G to your Mac. Once your device is connected, hold the power button until the “Slide to Power Off” appears - then slide to power it off. Press next. redsn0w will not put your iPhone 3G into DFU mode. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions exactly. Start by holding down the power button for 3 seconds. Hold down both both the power button as well as the home button for 10 seconds. Finally release the power button while continuing to hold the home button down until redsn0w detects your iPhone 3G. Once device will now reboot once it is detected by redsn0w. The application will now begin the process of uploading the new ramdisk. Once this is complete you will be notified that the jailbreak process is complete. Click the Finish button. Even though redsn0w completed it’s process your iPhone will still be finishing up. This can take up to 5 minutes. Be patient, when it’s done you will have a jailbroken iPhone 3G with Cydia/Icy on the SpringBoard. Unlocking ProcessNow if you are looking to unlock your iPhone follow these steps below.

Dear Apple — Where’s the iDisk App? Posted: 23 Jun 2009 09:09 AM PDT Hey, it’s started to work with Push Notification apps, so who can blame us for taking a second bite at the Dear Apple. So… Where’s that free iDisk App at? You remember, the one on your What’s New in MobileMe website:
Apple, you tease! It’s labeled “Coming Soon”, fair enough, but any hints on how soon “soon” is? This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Raw Performance: iPhone 3GS 4x Faster than iPhone 3G at 3D! Posted: 23 Jun 2009 09:08 AM PDT TapTapTap, developers of the upcoming Plasma app decided to slap a big, honkin' frame rate indicator on a raw version just to see what differences, if any, the iPhone 3GS hardware provided compared to the previous generation iPhone 3G. The results?
Check out the link above to watch the full QuickTime video. Impressive stuff. TUAW, meanwhile, had this to say:

Dev-Team Releases Ultrasn0w for iPhone 3G Posted: 23 Jun 2009 07:07 AM PDT The wait is over ladies and gentleman. The Dev-Team has released their latest software to unlock iPhone 3G’s running the 3.0 software. Again, it is important to remember when a 3G S jailbreak application is released do not use Ultrasn0w with the iPhone 3G S. To unlock your iPhone 3G 3.0 is as simple as jailbreaking your device, downloading Ultrasn0w via Cydia, and running the software. For full detailed directions be sure to check out the Dev-Teams blog. Before you decide to jailbreak and unlock there are a few things you should know. If you do not know what you are doing - please do not attempt this as there is a possibility you can permanently damage your device. Regarding jailbreaking, remember most of the apps available will not work on 3.0 due to the developers not updating their apps yet. So be careful on what you install. Want to learn more? Quick App 3.0: IM+ with Push Notification for iPhone Posted: 23 Jun 2009 05:26 AM PDT Still waiting for its turn to get into the slow-moving App Store, IM+ is ready with version 3.1 which adds support for iPhone 3.0 Push Notifications. Text alerts, badges, and sounds are all supported, and can be individually enabled or disabled both through Apple’s Notifications Settings panel. IM+ supports a ton of services, including Skype, AOL, MSN, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo!, Google Talk, Jabber, ICQ, and MySpace. Testing it with AOL proved to be a quick, clean experience, with IM+ launching and re-connecting to their server in a brisk and snappy manner on an iPhone 3GS. Copy and Paste also worked well, albeit it only in the text input box (I couldn’t find a way to select or copy text from previous chat bubbles). Hopefully Apple will approve IM+ 3.1 with Push for the App Store soon. In the meantime, you can take advantage of sale pricing on the previous version, 3.0 (which pushed via re-direct to email). $5.99 via iTunes. More screenshots after the break!

iPhone 3GS in Canada: Rogers Redeemed-ish? Posted: 23 Jun 2009 04:52 AM PDT
Above, customers at the Montreal Apple Store wait for Rogers to get their systems working For the second year in a row, Rogers provided awesome new plans for their customers, but did it at literally the 11th hour and utterly failed to inform many of their service reps about the last-minute changes in pricing and policy for the iPhone 3GS (kudos for getting the marketing folks up to speed though!) and also failed to get enough bandwidth and infrastructure in place to make sure Apple could actually upgrade customers, and Sales Central could remain functional. Result: mass chaos on iPhone launch day. Luckily for one Rogers customer, however, Rogers online rep Keith McArthur, the office of the President of Rogers, and a little luck resulted in a happy ending. Mark wrote in to let us know about his experience:
Congrats Mark. Let’s hope the rest of us have just as much luck when we call in! This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |

iPhone Law and Order - TSA Recording and Find My iPhone Locating Posted: 23 Jun 2009 04:22 AM PDT In the justice system of internet zaniness, iPhones are represented by two separate yet equally important groups. Apple, who creates cool technology, and the badapps people who put it to use. These are their stories… First up, reader Matt pointed us towards an article on CNN.com where a passenger traveling within the US, carrying over $4000 in cash, was held for questioning and all he had to defend himself was:
Next up, Icebike let us know about Intermittent Kevin (via Slashdot) who was attending a Lego convention in Chicago who’s iPhone was left behind at a bar, and stolen. His only hope:
(Note: while he recovered his iPhone, he might just as easily have run into Hannibal Lecter. “Hero complex” is personal protection faux-pas 101. These stories are presented for interest-sake only. No one at TiPb or SPE advises anyone to put their life in jeopardy for a gadget.) This is a story by the iPhone Blog.
