iPhone 3G S vs Palm Pre: Browser Speed Test Posted: 19 Jun 2009 03:27 PM PDT We’re going to kick off the Palm Pre vs. iPhone 3G S excitement with a simple browser smackdown. The short version: the iPhone 3G S is faster in our video above, but the Pre is close and actually is edging out the iPhone after the just-applied 1.03 webOS update. The part you actually should pay attention to is "time to content," i.e. how long it takes to load up the stuff you actually want to read as opposed to the javascripty-bits. Bottom line: speed-wise there’s a hair’s-breadth between the two browsers, it’s so close that you really ought not be making your purchase decision based on it — or bragging about it either way. Feature-wise, we give the edge to the iPhone 3G S — they are on version 3.0 while the Pre is just getting started at 1.02 / 1.03. The ability to pop up a link in a new browser window is quite nice — not to mention Autofill. I myself prefer the Pre’s Card metaphor to the in-app tabs of Safari, but that ’s a matter of taste. Stay tuned for more as we pit these devices against each other! [cross-posted at PreCentral.net] This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
iPhone 3.0 on iPhone 3G S: Battery Percentage Meter Found! Posted: 19 Jun 2009 01:29 PM PDT The case of the missing battery percentage meter has been solved! Developers found it in the iPhone 3.0 beta, but when iPhone 3.0 release hit, it was nowhere to be found… until now! Looks like it’s appearing exclusively on the new iPhone 3G S. Why, we have no idea — and can’t fathom a reason for, but check out Jeremy’s screenshot above. There it be! This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
TiPb iPhone 3G S vs. iPhone 3G Browser Speed Smackdown Posted: 19 Jun 2009 12:19 PM PDT Two iPhones enter, only one can be left standing. Which one will it be? Well, both devices got the Nitro JavaScript rendering engine boost courtesy of iPhone 3.0, but the iPhone 3G S brought a little gun to this knife-fight in the form of double the RAM, a faster GPU, and a super souped up processor with higher clock speed and phat’er pipes. (Think 486 vs. Pentium on the desktop). So let’s just load up our friends CrackBerry.com, PreCentral.net, theiPhoneblog.com HQ, and Steve Job’s perennial New York Times test page and see. (No, not which will win — we already know the answer to that! — but by how much?!) This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |

iPhone 3.0 Pwnage Jailbreak Tool Now Available for Mac OS X Posted: 19 Jun 2009 11:02 AM PDT Now before you get too excited let me just off by saying this jailbreak is not for Apple’s latest hardware, iPhone 3G S. This is only for the iPhone 3G or iPhone 2G running the 3.0 software. Now with that said, the Dev-Team has released the proper tool for Mac OS X users to jailbreak your iPhone 3G’s running 3.0, PwnageTool 3.0. Be warned, if do not know what you are doing, don’t attempt it! This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.0 firmware from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of some bugs and unexpected changes this will be a multipart release, starting with the release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X. QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon, please don't bug us about it, we are working flat out to get everything finished to release them. So there you have it expert users. And for those less certain of their skills, more and more jailbreak options will be available to you in the near future. Sit tight and be patient. This is a story by the iPhone Blog. TiPb White 32GB IPhone 3G S Unboxing and Quick Look Posted: 19 Jun 2009 10:27 AM PDT Okay, enough with the unboxings. Fair point. But we iPhone people only get one device a year, so this is our Super Bowl and dagnabit we plan to enjoy it! This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |

TiPB Standing in Line for the iPhone 3G S Posted: 19 Jun 2009 05:45 AM PDT I’m at the Apple Flagship Store, waiting in line for the latest, greatest iPhone 3G S. 10 or so people right now, but apparently some tour buses are on the way. We’ll update this thread with more from TiPb and our readers, so if you’re in line, head over to the TiPb iPhone Forums and post your pics, stories, and videos. Dieter will move some of the funnest over here. Good luck to all! [pic thanks to @Forian} [The updates continue after the break!]
Meanwhile, many folks in Europe already have the 3G S in hand, per pguich in our iPhone Forums:
Forum member nyknicks4412 is genuinely excited about his iPhone 3G S video taken in the parking lot above. Leanne Lofte isn’t so sure that she needed to show up at 5:30am in Monterey, CA, what with only nine people in line. Matthew Miller sends word that rain has finally come to Seattle… just in time to fall on iPhone Line sitters. Fortunately, there are umbrellas to be had. Rene’s all set! No activation yet, though — has to go home and do it through iTunes, he says. This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Rogers Customers: Prepare for a Long Wait. Everybody Else: Smile Posted: 19 Jun 2009 05:42 AM PDT
Above, customers at the Montreal Apple Store wait for Rogers to get their systems working Upgrading to an iPhone 3G S in Canada? We feel for you, and we fear we’re going to continue to feel for you for a healthy portion of the day. Last year there were activation backlogs and hang-ups all over, but it was especially egregious in Canada, where people were waiting for half the day for Rogers’ system to get up and happy and talking with Apple’s system. Our esteemed editor Rene Ritchie just called in from his Apple Store to say that their system isn’t showing the 3G S on the Rogers system and it’s unclear how exactly it’s going to be resolved. Last year we heard 6-hour-wait horror stories. This year we’re crossing our fingers that resolution will come more quickly. On the bright side, we haven’t heard a whiff of a problem anywhere else. From Switzerland to Cincinnati people who didn’t pre-order are finding lines short enough to guarantee everybody will get their phone and activations almost as quick as the iPhone 3G S itself. Update: Rene is currently channeling the fury of his fellow Rogers-snafu-victims on his twitter feed. This is a story by the iPhone Blog. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store.
