Apple to Palm: Careful Playing on our iTunes Lawn!

Posted: 16 Jun 2009 05:31 PM PDT

iphone_piratepre

Not quite “get off our lawn”, yet clearly a sign post warning that the lawn might on day get a tad hostile if you choose to linger there without leave. Here it is, via Daring Fireball, Apple’s latest Knowledge Base Article: iTunes: About unsupported third-party digital media players, aka the Palm Pre syncing saga:

This article is about iTunes and unsupported third-party digital media players.

Products Affected iTunes

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

So, if/when iTunes breaks compatibility with the Palm Pre — intentionally, incidentally, or otherwise, does this cover Apple?

Could HTML 5 Kill Flash on the iPhone?

Posted: 16 Jun 2009 11:52 AM PDT

iPhone SDK: Smashing Flash Rumors

Well, at least kill the need for Flash on the iPhone? Daring Fireball says a simple “yes” to Yahoo! Tech’s question.

The idea is that a standards based technology, open and broadly used, could make redundant proprietary and sometimes bloated and buggy plugins like Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Sun JavaFX.

Apple’s Safari, including Mobile Safari on the iPhone, and Mozilla Firefox are already supporting HTML5 features. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer — so far — isn’t.

The article gives pros and cons for both sides of the debate. Since Apple is introduction the third generation of their iPhone software tomorrow, and still no Flash in sight, we likely have a good idea which way they’re leaning already…

AT&T to iPhone Users: Be On the Proper iPhone Data Plan?

Posted: 16 Jun 2009 10:35 AM PDT

iPhone_data_att

Not long ago TiPb reported AT&T forcing every iPhone user who is not using a iPhone data plan onto the correct plan and possibly hitting you with extra charges. Now it seems AT&T is finally making good on that promise as Erica Sudan, over at TUAW, is now reporting AT&T is planning on dumping iPhone GoPhone accounts. TiPb thinks this is AT&T finally flipping the switch on iPhone users subscribed to non-iPhone data plans and GoPhone accounts are also falling victims in all of this. The following text message is being sent to various AT&T customers:

AT&T Free MSG: A new software upgrade for iPhone will be available on 6/17. This upgrade may affect your data service. Please visit att.com/iphone or call 800-901-9878 for a representative. If you download the software and are not on an approved iPhone data plan, your data service will be interrupted.

So AT&T is using the 3.0 software as it’s excuse to flip the switch, but exactly how would they know what software you currently are on? The only way would be if iTunes reported back to Apple and then they give the information to AT&T. That scenario is highly unlikely.

Anyone not on a iPhone data plan and using an iPhone get this text message yet? Be warned fellow GoPhone and non-iPhone data plan users…

iPhone Dev-Team to Demo 3.0 Unlock Tonight!

Posted: 16 Jun 2009 09:39 AM PDT

iphone_pirate_2

Just a little reminder for those of you who are waiting for the Dev-Team to unveil the 3.0 software unlock for iPhone 3G, there is a live demo tonight.

On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we'll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd and also placed here when the feed starts. The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w. But it's good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.

Keep in mind this unlock will not work along with the iPhone 3G S hardware. It is noted they may or may not be working on cracking the latest Apple has to offer.

P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don't expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don't have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging partial hack results.

The cat and mouse game continues…

Zeemote JS1 Bluetooth Game Controller Working on iPhone?

Posted: 16 Jun 2009 08:38 AM PDT

PocketGamer tells about the Zeemote JS1 Bluetooth gaming controller:

while this is in no way official, it seems some clever clogs has now got the compact thumb stick and buttons working with the iPhone.

What with iPhone 3.0’s API’s for Bluetooth accessory access, Jeremy thinks we might see more devices like this — if Apple’s smart. What do you think? Do you want/need an BT thumbstick to really get your iPhone game on, or is multi-touch enough?

TUAW brings word that Wolfram|Alpha, the revolutionary computational engine from the creator of Mathmatica, now has an iPhone (and iPod touch) optimized version available via http://www.wolframalpha.com/iphone.

Confession: aside from typing in “are you Skynet” and “do my taxes” I’m not quite sure how to use this new beastie, but if you’re smart enough to query up an answer to “what’s the second coolest smartphone, BlackBerry or Palm Pre?”, let us know your results!

App Store Engineers Unwilling to Face Q&A at WWDC 2009?

Marco.org (via Daring Fireball) shares as much as he can:

The last session of WWDC '09 yesterday was about publishing on the App Store. The content of sessions is under NDA, so I can't tell you what it was about. So I'll tell you what wasn't in it: the audience Q&A session that succeeded nearly every other WWDC session and usually provided invaluable access to Apple employees and useful additional knowledge to attendees. The session itself blew through its lightweight examples quickly, ending 45 minutes early. The majority of the audience was clearly there for the Q&A. As people lined up at the microphones around the room, the presenter abruptly showed a simple slide with only "WWDC" in plain lettering, thanked us for coming, and bolted off the stage. The Apple engineers, usually staying around the stage for one-on-one questions, were gone. The lights came up instantly, and it was the only session that didn't end in music. The audience was stunned.

So are the rest of us.

Apple?
