iOS 5 to include deep, system-wide Twitter integration? Posted: 31 May 2011 03:44 PM PDT Could iOS 5 include deep, system-wide Twitter integration? It could if TechCrunch and Daring Fireball are correct. First up, MG Siegler rumored:
To which John Gruber added:
We’ve seen Apple work with Twitter on Ping integration after their initial efforts with Facebook fizzled. If iOS 5 includes Twitter as an option in the Action button, the way it does everything from email to MobileMe to YouTube today, is that interesting? Or is there something beyond even that? iOS 5 to include deep, system-wide Twitter integration? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Lodsys ignores Apple, files suit against 7 iOS developers Posted: 31 May 2011 03:39 PM PDT Lodsys has decided to ignore Apple’s strongly worded demand they cease harassing iOS developers, and instead decided to file suit against 7 of them, including Combay Inc. (Mega Poker Online Texas Holdem), Iconfactory (Twitterrific), Illusion Labs (Labyrinth), Shovelmate (69 Positions), Quickoffice, Richard Shinderman (Hearts), Wulven Games (Shadow Era). Says Lodsys:
They’ve also promised $1000 to each developer if they’re in the wrong. Says Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents:
The ball is now back in Apple’s (and Google’s, as one developer is being sued for the Android version of his app as well). Will they indemnify developers, offer to take on the litigation on their behalf, counter sue Lodsys to invalidate the patent, or all or none of the above? UI is one among just a few college campuses who have created their own iOS apps for students, and this is clearly a step in the right direction. Romy Bolton, Manager of Emerging Technologies says the app has “become an expectation”, and they’re glad they jumped into the mobile app market early. TiPb Asks: How do you check the weather or your iPhone or iPad? Posted: 31 May 2011 05:28 AM PDT How do you check the weather on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad? On the iPhone and iPod touch you have the built in, Yahoo! powered Weather app and while it’s relatively simple and quick it doesn’t provide a lot of information. The iPad doesn’t even come with a built in weather app, so finding something you like in the App Store or bookmarking a website are your only options. If you use an App Store app or website, which one(s) do you use? Do you prefer quick, current, high level info or do you like all the bells and whistles, like radar, hour-by-hour forecasts, and lots of indexes? Do you want a lot of animation or eye candy, or just the facts? How do you like your weather? TiPb Asks: How do you check the weather or your iPhone or iPad? is a story by TiPb. Google shutting down Translate API Posted: 31 May 2011 05:18 AM PDT Google has announced they’ll be limiting and eventually shutting down the Google Translate API, meaning any iPhone or iPad apps that rely on the service for free translation functionality aren’t going to be able to reply on it any longer.
Google Translate is a great, free-as-in-Google web-based language translation service that can tell you what a seal is in French or what ferme means in English. The API let developers use that free service in other web apps, or in native apps like those in iOS. Which is what Marco Armant guesses just might have been the problem.
Microsoft’s Bing still offers a free translation API, so developers have an alternative, for now at least. It’s another example, however, of how risky it can be to base your app on the goodwill and free offerings of a big internet company like Google, Twitter, or Facebook.
