Curious how to setup an AT&T account on Apple’s iPad Wi-Fi + 3G? Dieter’s going to take you through it, step by step, in fine video form after the break.
Either tap the popup that asks if you want to setup a 3G on startup, or tap the Settings app.
Go to Cellular Data
Tap view account (and then wait, it takes a while).
Enter your user personal info and credit cards details and create a login.
Choose your plan, $14.99 for 256mb or $29.99 for unlimited
Remember, it rolls-over automatically so you’ll get billed again next month!
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the terms of service (seriously?) and tap to agree.
Add international data if you’re a traveler.
Wait for them to notify you when it’s complete.
Once you get the notification, you are good to go!
(If you want to, you can go back to Settings and make changes to your account).
iPad Wi-Fi + 3G is at TiPb HQ and editor-in-chief Dieter Bohn is unboxing it the way unboxing is meant to be — nay, had to be — done. Pure gadget pr0n, after the break…
Today the day Apple’s iPad Wi-Fi + 3G finally goes on sale which means a bunch of you are waiting by the door for the delivery truck or getting ready to head out to the Apple Store and pick one up. While you’re waiting, or once you get it and come back, you might be wondering what’s next? Don’t worry, TiPb’s got your back:
Get apps and games. There are thousands of iPad specific apps already (seriously, we’ve stopped counting!). You can find them — all of them — on iTunes, either on your Windows or Mac, or right on the iPad App Store. We’ve covered a ton of iPad apps here already, and we’ll be reviewing more each week, so keep your eyes peeled!
Get accessories. The TiPb Store has just started offering iPad accessories and more and more are in stock every day. If you want to protect that big, beautiful screen or wrap a case over that pristine aluminum shell, be sure to check them out!
Get talking. If you just want to talk about your new iPad and all those apps and accessories, or if you need help getting started (or to trouble-shoot bugs), or advice and recommendations, we have two new discussion groups just for you: iPad Device and Help Forum and iPad Apps and Games Forum.
GoodReader for iPad [on sale for $0.99 - iTunes store] is a gem of an app for anyone who wants to access and manage their documents on the go, especially large PDF files. It is upscaled from the iPhone version, but while the interface isn’t radically different this is one case where bigger translates effectively into more and better.
The large iPad screen means you get to see your documents on the left and your panels — Preview, Find Files, Manage Files, Web Downloads, Downloads in Progress, Recent Downloads, Connect to Servers — on the right.
Tap on a document on the left, including those super-large PDF’s and GoodReader brings it up full screen and in our experience, fast. Now navigating a PDF is a bit of a chore at this point due to the iPhone up/down paradigm being retained, but the developers are working on a better, more iPad-like page turning paradigm and we should see that in an update.
GoodReader can show pretty much any file type supported by iPhone OS, including images (JPG, PDF, GIF), Microsoft Office docs, Apple iWork docs, HTML, TXT, and all the sound and video you’d expect. It will even reflow PDFs for you if that’s your thing. There’s a search and a preview on the right side so it’s easy to find the local file you’re looking for.
Document management is powerful, even if the UI is… awkward. There’s a strange assortment of little buttons, but they do wonderful things like protect/un-protect, star/un-star, mark as read/unread, zip/unzip (yes, ZIP!), copy, cut, emial, and more.
To get the files into GoodReader you can browse the web or enter a URL, connect to an online repository like iDisk, DropBox, Box.net, Google Docs, or any WebDAV, IMAP, or POP3 server. You can also connect to a local server and transfer files right over from your computer. GoodReader also supports Apple’s USB file transfer via iTunes, and the latest version includes Document Sharing so you can open compatible docs in GoodReader from other apps (i.e. if you receive a PDF in iPad Mail, you can open it directly in GoodReader).
While the UI inarguably needs some refinement, there’s no arguing about the power of GoodReader for the iPad. If you have big doc needs, check it out. And do it soon, since it’s on sale for $0.99!)
Spring has sprung and what better way to celebrate the great driving weather than teaming up with TeleNav to give away five (5) 1-year subscriptions to AT&T Navigator (for those of you in the US) or Rogers Navigator (for those of you in Canada).
Want? Great, all you have to do is head on over to Facebook and:
(You must become a fan of both to qualify. We’ll check!)
Give away starts now and ends Friday, April 30 at 12pm PT so get to it!
Legal stuff after the break…
The Promotion shall be open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada who have reached the age of majority in their state or province of residence at the time of entry.
Two would-be Microsoft-based competitors pre-emptively bit the dust yesterday — both Microsoft’s own Courier and HP’s Windows 7 Slate are no more, and it’s fairly safe to say a third, Fusion Garage’s JooJoo, is being kept alive on life support for now. all this follows 500,000+ opening week iPad Wi-Fi sales for Apple, and comes on the eve of the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G release.
Courier was never made manifest beyond some animated concept movies showing off a dual-screen, notebook-like device with innovative UI and finger and pen-based input. The video was promising enough to wow the tech world but at the same time set expectations incredibly high for software that didn’t exist. That could have been a factor in the cancelation, along with the realities of trying to sell a device whose price-point would literally be double the iPad’s. Gizmodo, who broke word of the Courier’s existing, also tolled its end:
At any given time, we’re looking at new ideas, investigating, testing, incubating them. It’s in our DNA to develop new form factors and natural user interfaces to foster productivity and creativity. The Courier project is an example of this type of effort. It will be evaluated for use in future offerings, but we have no plans to build such a device at this time.
The HP Slate was less vapor, more ware, and was even given the Ballmer-bump during the CES 2010 keynote in an effort to show up Apple. The idea of an extra chunky Intel tablet running a desktop OS like Windows 7 probably appealed to power users, and to HP until about a minute after they bought Palm. TechCrunch has heard through sources that the Slate is no more. We’re betting the timing is no coincidence and HP re-announces a much more mobile-friendly, webOS based Slate in the future.
Oh, and Engadget says the JooJoo is being updated.
Apple is launching the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G in the US today, and if you’re planning to pick one up at your local Apple Retail Store, it’s been confirmed they’re closing from 4pm to 5pm local time to get ready for you.
No doubt they’ll be stocking up and getting the demos ready, but will there be crowds again?
Let us know if you’re planning to check it out, or if you’re sitting at home waiting for the delivery truck to come to you.
Apple announces WWDC, buys Intrisity, Siri, how do you share your iPhone photos, Chaos Rings, Facebook privacy, BlackBerry 6, HP buys Palm, and all the week’s news, how-tos, and apps. Listen in!
